LONGEVITY TIPS
- Drive your car gently until the differential oil is
viscous and has warmed from gear friction. Differential gear oil is
usually heavy weight (thick) oil even without the added effects of cold
temperature.
- Never put different size tires on the rear axle.
This will strain and damage the differential.
- Consider replacing the standard differential drain
plug with a magnetized version of the same size. This will prevent
normal, metallic wear particles from circulating throughout the differential,
thus allowing for an extended useful life. The magnetic plug, exposed to much
lubricant flow, will pull the metallic debris out of the passing oil and retain
it until the next oil change.
- Do not put standard differential oil, for example,
SAE 80W-90 GL-5 gear oil, into a patented limited slip differential. If
your differential has a patented or proprietary limited slip axle, it may
require special lubricant. These differentials will make noise, slip and become
damaged. Read the fill bolt carefully to make sure it has no special markings
that indicate special oil is required.
